The Procedure

What is the ROPA Method?

Reception of Oocytes from Partner (ROPA), also known as Reciprocal IVF, is a shared maternity treatment designed specifically for female couples. It allows both partners to participate biologically in the pregnancy.

A

Partner A: Genetic Mother

Undergoes Ovarian Stimulation and Puncture to provide the eggs (genetic material).

+

Sperm Donor

Eggs are fertilized in the lab using an anonymous, screened sample from our Semen Bank (ICSI or conventional IVF).

B

Partner B: Gestational Mother

Receives the embryo via Embryo Transfer after endometrial preparation, carrying the pregnancy to term.

"This method allows both partners to be intimate participants in the journey of creating their life together."

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions from our international patients.

Is the ROPA method legal in Costa Rica?
Yes, the ROPA method is fully legal and regulated in Costa Rica. The country protects reproductive rights and same-sex marriage is lawful, ensuring your family is legally recognized.
What is the success rate?
Success rates depend on age and ovarian reserve, but generally range from 60% to over 80% per cycle, especially if the egg provider is young or if PGT-A testing is used.
Do I need to be married?
It is not strictly required to be married to undergo treatment, but for legal parentage in some home countries, marriage might be beneficial. We recommend consulting with a family lawyer in your state.
How long do we need to stay in Costa Rica?
Typically, the partner carrying the pregnancy needs to be in Costa Rica for about 7-10 days for the embryo transfer. The partner providing eggs needs to be present for the egg retrieval (about 10-12 days), which can often be coordinated to overlap.
